Honda Grom Overview and Specifications

Since its introduction in 2014, the Honda Grom has gone on to become the King of Fun. It’s lightweight, nimble, and offers easy handling, making it the perfect tool for assaulting narrow alleys and one-way streets. The Grom has seen significant improvements made over the years. The second generation came out in 2018 and is now being updated with the third generation of Honda minibikes, the all-new 2022 Honda Grom, which hit the US market mid 2021.

This latest model features an extensive makeover with better performance, some comfort-focused updates, and cool, modular styling, all while remaining true to the King of Fun premise set by the original Honda Grom back in 2014.

Engine Performance

Honda has updated the Grom’s engine, making the bike slightly faster than its previous model. The engine is also designed to be more efficient and easily maintained at home, which is aided by the presence of a removable oil filter. It also features a larger airbox that increases intervals between maintenance; Honda says that the airbox will only need to be changed every 10k miles in ‘normal riding conditions.’

And that’s not all. There is a smaller bore, a slightly longer bore, and a compression ratio of 10.0:1 (the previous model had 9.3:1) for improved torque and engine response.

Gearbox

The 2022 Honda Grom’s Gearbox and final drive have been updated to support a longer range. For this, Honda added a fifth gear and increased the rear sprocket sizing to 38 teeth (from 34 in the previous model). The front sprocket remains the same at 15T.

The added gear and the wider spread of gearing ratios allow the Grom to attain a higher top speed without over-revving the engine.

Braking

The braking remains largely unchanged from the previous generation, with a dual-piston caliper for the front 220mm rotor and a single-piston caliper for the rear 190mm rotor. Fortunately, these components work well together to easily bring the bike’s 227 pounds to a halt. Those models equipped with ABS come with an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU).

Suspension

The Grom’s suspension has also remained the same: a nonadjustable 31mm cartridge fork and a single shock with preload adjustments only. This works okay until you exceed 45 mph, at which point you start feeling the bumps a little harder. Fortunately, the bike lets you improve these components if you deem them inadequate.

Comfort

The newer Honda Grom takes comfort quite seriously. This starts with its relatively low seat height of 30 inches to make it easier to flat-foot at stoplights and parking lots. The seat itself is flatter with thick padding that makes it comfortable for everybody, even tall riders.

Style

The Grom has one of the most recognizable styles among minibikes. This new model features some new bodywork with the engine, exhaust, wheels, and swingarm all blacked out to give it a tasty edgy look.

Customizations

Part of the fun of owning a Grom comes from the fact that it’s pretty easy to customize. Honda Grom 2022 continues that legacy with four easily removable body panels that should allow the owner’s creativity to shine in full strength. The bolt access points have been highlighted, making things significantly easier for first-time owners and also contributing to the bike’s overall aesthetic.
