1972 Honda Z50 K3

tbparts showcase build

Turning a bare 1972 K3 frame into a like-new rider with real power

Previously, we built an ’80s and ’90s Z50R to showcase the parts we offer for those models (also shown in this section of our website). This time, we wanted to highlight our parts for the earlier bikes.

We recently picked up a ’72 Z50 K3 frame that came with only the wheels, forks, top clamps, and handlebars. Because of that, it was an affordable and ideal candidate to showcase the full range of TBparts available for the ’72–’78 Z50 models.

For the engine, we kept a mostly stock appearance using a ’73 Z50 engine that we had been storing for years. Internally, however, we upgraded it with an 88cc stock-head kit to provide additional power for adult riders. The bike now runs and rides excellent and is virtually “like new.”

All engine restoration work was handled by Tim LaVoi, whom we consider one of the best in the business when it comes to restoring small Honda engines. Aside from TBparts components, most of the remaining parts are OEM Honda, including all hardware—a mix of new and replated originals.

We haven’t finalized the total cost of the project, but it likely came in between $3,500 and $3,800. This includes the frame, engine and restoration work, paint for the frame and forks, TBparts components, OEM Honda parts, and miscellaneous items such as tires and decals. Starting with a complete bike in decent condition would certainly reduce the overall cost. On the other hand, attempting a similar build using only OEM Honda parts could easily double or even triple the expense, as many original parts are discontinued, difficult to find, and command premium prices when they do surface.
